I don't think there is currently an entity known as the Independent Party that exists nationally in the US, at least in a meaningful way. Today, third party candidates could simply run as self-declared and self-identifying small i independents or establish a place on the ballot with a new or existing third party link. The choice would vary from candidate to candidate, and from state to state depending on state laws re how to qualify for a spot on the ballot.

You made the right point. Democracy IS messy, but it is the best thing going.
All actions have consequences! If a campaign, however well intentioned, results in the election of a nonintended candidate, it is ill advised.

Thank you for your response. Representatives such as Bernie Sanders and several others identify as Independent which prompted the question.
