Our nation has been almost evenly split politically for some time. Very important elections have been won and lost by very slim margins, including two (and almost three) presidential elections out of the last six in which the candidate with fewer votes was nonetheless elected thanks to the electoral college. Flukey-seeming outcomes have become normal. When things are this close, it doesn’t take many voters changing their minds to produce very different results. While history has treated the incumbent president’s party poorly in midterm elections, we should remember that history is being made every day. And maybe the Dobbs decision overturning Roe will impact the political history in the making right now.
